According to the lawsuit filed Monday in Harris County, the woman is suing Watson for $1 million in damages.

The woman, identified only as Jane Doe in the court documents, said the incident took place after she invited Watson to her apartment. She said Watson undressed shortly after arriving and demanded a massage.

It’s the latest legal entanglement for Watson, who settled 23 of 24 lawsuits against him in 2022 after two dozen women accused him of sexual misconduct and harassment during massage therapy sessions.

The 28-year-old Watson served an 11-game NFL suspension in 2022 for violating the league’s personal conduct policy, stemming from those accusations. He also had to pay a $5 million fine and underwent independent counseling before he was reinstated.

The new lawsuit was filed by attorney Tony Buzbee, who represented the other women who alleged Watson’s misbehavior.

The Browns did not have an immediate response to the latest lawsuit. The NFL declined to comment.

Watson could also face further discipline from the league.

The three-time Pro Bowler has been plagued by issues since Cleveland traded five draft picks, including three first-round selections, to the Texans in 2022 for him. The Browns then signed Watson to a fully guaranteed $230 million contract.

Watson has been limited to just 13 starts due to the suspension and a shoulder injury that required surgery last season.

He played for the first time in 10 months on Sunday and completed 24 of 45 passes for 169 yards with two interceptions and a touchdown in a 33-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Owner of hospitalized US Olympic gymnastics therapy dog gives update https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/national-international/owner-of-hospitalized-us-olympic-gymnastics-therapy-dog-gives-update/3713451/ 3713451 post 9751387 Courtesy of NBC Olympics https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/07/Screenshot-2024-07-31-at-9.36.25 PM-e1722476303410.png?fit=300,188&quality=85&strip=all Beacon, the golden retriever therapy dog for the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team, has returned home after surgery and a hospital stay.

The 4-year-old dog was taken to a pet hospital last week, where he was treated for a high fever and pleural effusion, a condition where excess fluid accumulates between the lungs and the chest wall. His owner, Tracey Callahan Molnar, explained that she took him to the hospital after noticing symptoms such as stiffness, labored breathing and fever.

In a Sept. 9 Instagram update, Molnar announced he is now home.

“Beacon has some appetite, eating some of his meals on his own and me hand feeding him the rest,” she wrote. “I’m happy to say, beacon ate his entire dinner on his own.”

Molnar’s health update included photos of his time in the hospital and later in good spirits on a drive with Molnar.

The post also noted that she and Beacon are still holding out for a diagnosis and a treatment plan.

“Beacon is not out of the woods yet but i’m not sure we could have even gotten to today without your help,” she wrote toward the end of her post. “A huge and heartfelt thank you to all of you!”

Users responded to the post with well wishes and concern.

“Hopefully recovery at home proves to be the best medicine. Sending positive thoughts and virtual treats,” one user replied.

“Praying it’s not serious and he’s going to be fine,” another replied. “Beacon has inspired me to sign up to a charity for my own golden retriever to be a therapy dog volunteer.”

Beacon became a fan favorite during the 2024 United States Olympic gymnastics team trials in June because of the support he provided to athletes like Suni Lee and Simone Biles. Read on for more about him.

Beacon’s health timeline

On Sept. 4, Molnar shared on Instagram that Beacon had been admitted to an emergency pet hospital the day before.

“This is an incredibly difficult post to make. I’ve decided to share this now because beacon has 50k + followers and i know that can mean 50k + people sending him wishes for healing and good health,” she wrote at the time.

Molnar expressed her hope that Beacon’s legion of followers — currently 56,000 and counting — would send him “wishes for healing and good health.”

Molnar added that Beacon was not reacting to treatments, including anti-inflammatory meds and cold laser therapy. According to the post, X-rays “showed fluid in his chest cavity, which was at least in part the reason for the labored breathing.”

“The high fever was of great concern to his veterinarian. The recommendation was to transport him to an emergency hospital with specialists who could diagnose and begin to treat him,” the message continued.

Molnar noted that while Beacon had undergone some diagnostic tests, more had to be completed.

“My understanding is that there are many potential causes therefore, many things to rule out,” she wrote, adding that she would keep his faithful followers updated.

Days later, on Sept. 6, Molnar shared that Beacon was still lethargic but “open to gentle hugs, pets and conversation” when she was visiting him at the hospital.

“We still don’t have definitive answers yet,” she wrote alongside a video collage of Beacon and her visit. “He has needed to have fluid removed from his chest cavity multiple times and during a procedure yesterday to take tissue samples from some concerning lung tissue (that showed on the CT scan he had), they placed two ports which will in part, make the drainage of that fluid easier. it’s something they will teach me to do so that he might be able to come home sooner.”

She added that his lung tissue biopsy would take five to seven days.

“During our visits, I read messages to Beacon from the autograph book that Milli, a rhythmic gymnast, so kindly gave Beacon,” she wrote at the time. “I also read the comments from you that have been posted on Instagram. Please know that your comments mean so much to me and I really want Beacon to hear them as well. I want him to know how loved he is by so many.”

Beacon is USA Gymnastics’ first therapy dog

The Instagram page for Beacon, USA Gymnastics’ first official therapy dog, is filled with snapshots of him with Olympians like Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, former Olympic gymnasts Aly Raisman and Laurie Hernandez, and many more athletes.

In an interview with ESPN, Molnar said that Beacon was an “emotional sponge” for people competing.

“(Therapy dogs) absorb the stress of the people they’re relieving the stress off of,” she told ESPN. “So even though he might be lying still for two hours, he’s wiped out afterwards.”

Due to “challenges with logistics,” Beacon could not support Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics, his Instagram noted on July 22.

“Beacon and i will be cheering our olympians on from california,” Molnar wrote on the post.

Beacon received Olympics-themed toys and, in late August, provided animal-assisted therapy at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Lake Placid, New York.

Watch: Bodycam shows chaotic scene of Tyreek Hill traffic stop https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/nfl/tyreek-hill-bodycam-video-police-detainment/3713424/ 3713424 post 9869597 Getty https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/GettyImages-2170877351-e1725924773632.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 The Miami-Dade Police Department on Monday released bodycam footage of Tyreek Hill’s detainment Sunday ahead of the Dolphins‘ home game.

Hill, who was detained during a traffic stop and eventually cited for reckless driving and driving without a license, was pulled from his car by an officer about a minute into the video – and pushed to the ground. Hill was pulled out of the car after a dispute over his window being rolled up after the initial contact with an officer.

One police officer has been placed on administrative leave and an internal investigation into the incident is underway, according to officials.

In the video, the star wideout appears to be talking on the phone while on the asphalt, with several officers now involved, saying, “I’m getting arrested.” As he is handcuffed, an officer tells him, “When we tell you to do something, you do it.”

Hill was then brought up to his feet, where officers took him to sit along the sidewalk. One police officer can be seeing putting an arm around Hill’s neck and forcing him to the ground while Hill yells repeatedly that he recently had surgery on his knee.

A representative for the police union said the 30-year-old was at fault for not being “immediately” cooperative with officers.

Toward the end of the video, Hill could be heard telling an officer, “I can’t run. I’m not gonna run, bruh. I promise you I’m not gonna run, s—.”

“If I wasn’t Tyreek Hill, lord knows, I probably would have been like, worst-case scenario, I would have been shot or would have been locked up” and “put behind bars, you know, for a simple speeding ticket,” Hill told NBC News in the aftermath of the incident.

The Miami-Dade Police Department later on Sunday opened an Internal Affairs investigation into the situation, and one of the involved officers was placed on administrative duties.

Drew Rosenhaus, Hill’s agent, told NBC6, “We’re going to look into it. This isn’t over on our end.”

Hill eventually suited up to play the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he logged seven catches for 130 yards and a touchdown, which he celebrated with a handcuff move.

Tyreek Hill fears he could have been shot in ‘worst-case scenario' during police stop outside stadium https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/nfl/tyreek-hill-fears-he-could-have-been-shot-police-stop/3713384/ 3713384 post 9812036 Getty https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/08/GettyImages-2166203682_7c7756-e1725921095122.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Tyreek Hill believes that if he weren’t a famous football player, officers may have shot or arrested him during a police confrontation that “went from 0 to 60,” the Dolphins star said Monday.

The wide receiver was driving to the Dolphins-Jacksonville Jaguars game on Sunday when Miami-Dade police stopped him just outside Hard Rock Stadium, handcuffed him and put him face down on the pavement.

“If I wasn’t Tyreek Hill, lord knows, I probably would have been like, worst-case scenario, I would have been shot or would have been locked up” and “put behind bars, you know, for a simple speeding ticket,” Hill told NBC News.

“And that’s crazy that officers would take it, you know, to that level.”

The Miami-Dade Police Department has launched an internal affairs investigation, and at least one officer has been taken off the streets in the wake of the confrontation, which was captured on video that has been widely shared on social media.

Hill insists he was cooperative with police, rolling down his window and giving his identification. The receiver said he was in no rush because he was within the shadows of Hard Rock Stadium and had no reason to be anxious or in a hurry.

“It just went from 0 to 60 man from the moment that those guys pulled up behind me, knocked on my window, it went from 0 to 60 immediately,” said Hill, adding that he called team security officials from the car.

A representative for the police union said Hill was at fault for not being “immediately” cooperative with officers.

The department declined to comment on the union’s account, saying police officials must wait until the internal affairs investigation is completed before publicly discussing the incident.

Hill was cited for reckless driving and driving without a license, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said.

Hill, 30, thanked teammates — tight end Jonnu Smith and defensive lineman Calais Campbell — who were driving by, saw him being detained and stopped to help.

Hill said he was particularly upset that Campbell was handcuffed even though his teammate was standing off to the side. The highly respected 38-year-old Campbell is a former Walter Payton Man of the Year winner.

“When I saw Jonnu and Calais pull up … I didn’t feel alone anymore,” Hill said.

“They ended up handcuffing Calais for just being 6-8 I think. But it was crazy. It was crazy how that same officer who took me down handcuffed Calais for just standing on the side.”

Ultimately, Hill said he’s happy no one was injured or worse.

“That officer was really on a power trip,” he said. “He felt like he just needed to … do something that day, you know. But like I said, I’m glad nobody was hurt.”

Hill is one of pro football’s best-known playmakers.

His 77 career TD catches is fifth among active players and 36th all time, just behind No. 35 DeAndre Hopkins (78) and retired Harold Carmichael and Charley Taylor who are tied at No. 33 with 79 scoring grabs. Carmichael and Taylor are both in the Hall of Fame.

The incident didn’t appear to impact Hill’s on-field performance in Sunday’s season opener; he caught seven passes for 130 yards and a touchdown in Miami’s 20-17 victory.

Faced with first-and-10 from the Miami 20, late in the third quarter and the Jags leading 17-7, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa connected with Hill on a slant at their own 46-yard line.

Hill then raced past two Jaguar defenders to complete the electrifying 80-yard TD which sparked the Miami comeback.

Hill put his hands behind his back, feigning that he was being handcuffed, as teammate Jaylen Waddle came up to walk the receiver off as if he was the arresting officer.

“You got to learn how to laugh and have a good time,” he said. “Man, whenever people think you’re … having a bad situation or having a low moment, I always try to find the good in every situation. That’s one way I’m able to stay so strong minded as a young male, well as a young Black male.”

Jesse Kirsch reported from Miami and David K. Li from New York City.

NASCAR Power Rankings: Team Penske trio on the rise after dominant Atlanta race https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/nascar-power-rankings-atlanta-joey-logano-ryan-blaney/3713033/ 3713033 post 9868207 Getty Images https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/240909-blaney-logano-cindric-getty.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all The NASCAR playoffs are here, which means it’s time for Team Penske to step up.

In what has become a yearly tradition, Roger Penske’s organization looks completely transformed as the stakes get raised.

Joey Logano scored the victory at Atlanta Motor Speedway to clinch the first spot in the Round of 12, while his teammates Ryan Blaney and Austin Cindric swept the opening stages.

Logano hasn’t had the strongest year, but the two-time champion clearly knows how to get it done in the postseason. The same can be said for Blaney, who turned it on to win his first title in 2023.

The Round of 16 continues next Sunday (3 p.m. ET, USA Network) at Watkins Glen as the New York road course hosts its first ever playoff race. How does the field stack up after the playoff opener? Here’s our latest NASCAR power rankings:

1. Tyler Reddick

Last week: 1

The No. 45 team took the safe approach on Sunday. Reddick, fresh off winning the regular season championship, was content to keep his car clean and salvage a solid points day. He did just that, finishing sixth after a hectic overtime restart. The three-time road course winner is in a great spot to advance to the Round of 12.

2. Christopher Bell

Last week: 4

Bell is quietly the hottest driver in the series after finishing fourth on Sunday. He has scored three straight top-fives, with top-six finishes in five of his last six races. With a 40-point cushion on the cutline, Bell is sitting pretty heading to a track where he’s never finished worse than eighth.

3. Kyle Larson

Last week: 2

This playoff system is ruthless – just ask Larson. He was the No. 1 seed, but a Stage 1 crash on Sunday now has him 10th in the standings. Larson has no one to blame but himself for the wreck, where he lost control of his car and slammed hard into the outside wall. Luckily for the No. 5 team, they’ve won at Watkins Glen twice in the last three years.

4. Ryan Blaney

Last week: 6

Blaney’s third-place finish gives him eight top-fives on the year, which matches his total from 2023 when he won the title. Even after being involved in a wreck late, the No. 12 was quick enough to regain track position and ultimately claim the overall points lead.

5. William Byron

Last week: 5

A ninth-place finish and nine stage points was enough to put Byron in a comfortable spot for the playoffs. He’s 33 points above the cutline, which is tied for Reddick and behind only Blaney and Bell. Byron won at Watkins Glen last year, so all signs are pointing in a positive direction for the No. 24 team.

6. Denny Hamlin

Last week: 3

Atlanta was a weekend to forget from start to finish for Hamlin. He had engine troubles in qualifying, with his lap over two seconds off the pace. Sunday didn’t go much better, as he seemed content to be cautious and avoid crashes. But the wrecks didn’t come and he was still collected in the lap-lap incident as he finished 24th and sits just two points above the cutline.

7. Joey Logano

Last week: 8

Is the even-year magic back? Logano has made the Championship 4 in every even-numbered year since this playoff format began in 2014. Even when he doesn’t have the best regular seasons, the 34-year-old veteran seems to find a way come playoff time. Logano still has a lot of work to get there in 2024, but his Atlanta performance suggests that it is absolutely possible.

8. Chase Elliott

Last week: 9

Elliott ran inside the top-10 for most of the race, finishing seventh in Stage 1, eighth in Stage 2 and eighth in the race for a solid run. The Georgia native obviously would’ve liked more at his home track, but this was a much-needed finish after three straight outside the top-10.

9. Ty Gibbs

Last week: 10

Gibbs was in position to potentially win his first race before a late caution. He botched the ensuing restart and fell to finish 17th after leading 37 laps, which puts him on the playoff bubble – just one point above the cutline heading into Watkins Glen.

10. Alex Bowman

Last week: First four out

Amid rumors about his job security, Bowman earned his best finish in nearly two months. He crossed the line fifth and scored 16 valuable stage points. The Hendrick Motorsports driver is now 27 points above the cutline as he looks to advance out of the Round of 16 for the fifth time in his career.

First four out: Austin Cindric, Brad Keselowski, Kyle Busch, Daniel Suarez

‘Uncooperative' Tyreek Hill ‘redirected to the ground' by officers: Police union president https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/nfl/uncooperative-tyreek-hill-redirected-to-the-ground-by-officers-police-union-president/3713115/ 3713115 post 9867760 @DylanVega1, Only in Dade https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/090924-tyreek-hill-detained-video-miami-dade-police.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was “redirected to the ground” and handcuffed by Miami-Dade Police officers after he became “uncooperative” during an incident near the team’s stadium before their season opener, a local police union president said.

In a statement Monday, South Florida Police Benevolent Association president Steadman Stahl said Hill was never under arrest during the encounter near Hard Rock Stadium shortly before the Dolphins took on the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

“He was briefly detained for officer safety, after driving in a manner in which he was putting himself and others in great risk of danger,” Stahl said in the statement. “Upon being stopped, Mr. Hill was not immediately cooperative with the officers on scene who, pursuant to policy and for their immediate safety, placed Mr. Hill in handcuffs.”

Videos from passersby showed officers surrounding Hill’s McLaren on the roadway.

“They knocked on his window, he rolled it down, said to them you know, ‘do what you need to do as a police officer’ and then he rolled it back up and then they asked him to roll it down again, he cracked it and they told him to get out of the car,” witness Dylan Vega said.

“It looks like Mr. Hill was not willing to take a seat. They were trying to get him to get him to sit on the curb. He would not, there was an officer walking him to the curb trying to get him to sit down and that second officer comes up and took him by the shoulder and redirected him down to the ground to take a seat,” Stahl told NBC6 on Monday.

The videos also showed Hill being placed in handcuffs and lying face-down on the ground, surrounded by multiple officers about a block from the stadium.

“Mr. Hill, still uncooperative, refused to sit on the ground and was therefore redirected to the ground,” Stahl said in the statement. “Once the situation was sorted out within a few minutes, Mr. Hill was issued two traffic citations and was free to leave.”

One of the officers involved was later placed on administrative duties, and Miami-Dade Police director Stephanie Daniels said an internal affairs investigation has been launched.

Police haven’t released the identity of the officer but Stahl said he’s been with the department for more than 25 years and is assigned to the motor unit.

“That should tell you everything you need to know,” Hill said after the game when he was told the officer was placed on administrative duties.

Hill added that he “had no idea” why he was placed in handcuffs and denied being “disrespectful.”

“I wasn’t disrespectful because my mom didn’t raise me that way,” Hill said. “Didn’t cuss. Didn’t do none of that. Like I said, I’m still trying to figure it out, man.”

After the incident, Hill suited up for the Dolphins and helped lead the team to a 20-17 win over the Jaguars, catching seven passes for 130 yards including an 80-yard touchdown that he celebrated by pretending to be handcuffed.

Dolphins defensive tackle Calais Campbell was also briefly handcuffed after coming to his teammate’s aid.

Campbell said he was driving into Hard Rock Stadium when he saw Hill handcuffed, and he stopped to help. The 17-year NFL veteran ended up in handcuffs as well, saying officers told him it was because he disobeyed their direct orders.

“I’d seen, I feel like excessive force, so I get out of the car to kind of just try to de-escalate the situation,” Campbell said, also calling the incident “a bit extreme.”

“What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill? Lord knows what that guy or guys would have done. I was just making sure that I was doing what my uncle always told me to do whenever you’re in a situation like that: ‘Just listen, put your hands on the steering wheel and just listen,'” Hill said. “I’m just glad that my teammates were there to support me in that situation because I felt alone.”

But the police union president said they were standing by the officers’ actions during the encounter.

“In this case, while we will wait for the investigation to run its course, based on what we know, we stand with the actions of our officers but look forward to further open communication moving forward,” Stahl’s statement read. “While we are confident in the actions that led to the stop of Mr. Hill, as with any investigation, we will wait for all of the facts to come out, along with any explanation Mr. Hill may have for his actions that initiated this unfortunate incident.”

NFL power rankings: Where things stand after Sunday's Week 1 action https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/nfl/nfl-power-rankings-sunday-week-1-chiefs-ravens/3712932/ 3712932 post 9867904 David Eulitt/Getty Images https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/240909-mahomes-worthy-getty.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 The Miami-Dade Police Department on Monday released bodycam footage of Tyreek Hill’s detainment Sunday ahead of the Dolphins‘ home game.

Will Los Angeles 2028 be the moment when the Paralympics conquer America? https://www.nbcwashington.com/paris-2024-summer-olympics/los-angeles-2028-paris-paralympics-encore-america/3712843/ 3712843 post 9867550 Steph Chambers/Getty Images https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/GettyImages-2170868430.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,178 Los Angeles, you’re next.

Paris raised the game for the Paralympics, with more than 4,000 athletes as well as 2.4 million tickets sold, which was second only to the London Games of 2012. Now the challenge for U.S. organizers is to top it with another breakout moment for para sports.

“We want to conquer America,” said Craig Spence, a spokesman for the International Paralympic Committee.

Retired Army Lt. Gen. Reynold Hoover, CEO of the organizing committee for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and Paralympics, is confident the Paralympics can do just that.

“We don’t have the Eiffel Tower, we don’t have the Grand Palais, but we’ve got the Coliseum and we’ve got the Rose Bowl and we’ve got SoFi (Stadium), and all these tremendous state-of-the-art venues,” he said in an interview Friday as the Paris Games wound down.

The Paralympic venues for Los Angeles haven’t been announced yet – ideally, they’ll be finalized by the end of 2024. Since LA received the bid in 2017, several venues such as Crypto.com Arena and SoFi Stadium have either been re-envisioned or built.

With five new sports coming to the Olympics, and the addition of para climbing in the Paralympics, a record combined total of up to 15,000 athletes are expected to compete.

“We try to figure out what is the sport that is kind of new, engaging, emerging and can offer the Paralympians another avenue in which to show their intensity and commitment to sport,” Hoover said.

If the Paralympics are to take a jump in popularity in the United States, several areas are generally considered key to that success.

Television

As the Paris Games finished, the NFL kicked off and college football finished its second full week, dominating the U.S. sports market.

Chris Hammer, a para triathlon veteran who won his first gold medal in the PTS5 classification for athletes with mild impairment, wouldn’t be surprised if the attention in the U.S. landed elsewhere — he said he’s “guilty” of it, too.

“I love American football, that’s what I watch on TV,” he said. “We don’t embrace the niche sports as much as Europeans do, so I think that is a challenge that we need to overcome if we want to replicate the success of Paris.”

Since the London Games in 2012, Channel 4 in the United Kingdom has broadcast the Paralympics on live, linear television. France’s national broadcaster, France Télévisions, had near continuous coverage of the games, but while NBC and Peacock’s Olympic and Paralympic coverage has expanded, there is no guarantee Americans will pay for subscriptions when it’s behind a paywall.

Aaron Phipps, a veteran of Great Britain’s wheelchair rugby team, remembers U.S. athletes excited about being on TV back in 2012: “I was thinking ‘What are you talking about?’ For us, it’s just completely normalized.”

Olympic fatigue

With the Olympics and Paralympics, there’s several weeks of competition for people to pay attention and remain engaged. The Parisian crowds have done it, but can the Southern Californians?

Hoover said with new technology in the works to generate a more interactive experience, Olympic fatigue shouldn’t be an issue. Instead, he thinks fans will be “more excited” because Los Angeles will act as a “home field advantage” for the United States.

True stars

With access to Hollywood, Spence said the organizing committee has a chance to make an impact that extends outside Los Angeles — he expects a global cultural shift when it comes to making Paralympic athletes true pop culture stars.

Visibility isn’t a new issue. Scout Bassett, who competed in Rio de Janeiro and is on the athletes’ commission for Los Angeles, thinks more work should be done together between Paralympians and Olympians to generate more awareness through already established stars.

“We are a country that celebrates winning, success, and until we start telling these stories and really giving these athletes the opportunities they deserve in that spotlight, that’s the only way we’re going to grow the Paralympics and change the perceptions about people with disabilities,” she said.

Seasoned Paralympians noted most up-and-coming athletes went years without knowing of para sports programs available to them. They say that must change to grow the games.

“My hope is that LA is gonna be this moment for so many people with disabilities to say, ‘Oh gosh, I could compete, there’s something I could do,’” said Chuck Aoki, a veteran of Team USA’s wheelchair rugby team.

Medal count

The U.S. once again dominated the Summer Olympics medals table in Paris but, in the Paralympics, China has been the leading force since 2004.

“I think we need to go back to the drawing board,” said Jessica Long, one of the most decorated Paralympic swimmers of all-time.

Long doesn’t think the U.S. reached its full potential in Paris and some Paralympians, who were a part of the three-year turnaround from Tokyo, have struggled.

“I think we need to really get on board, the whole U.S., just to showcase what we can do,” she said.

For Matt Stutzman, the compound archer gold medalist, it’s a financial issue and athletes could be backed more by the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

“(Money is) the stress – like you basically have to choose between Paralympic sport or supporting your family, and you always gotta pick your family,” Stutzman said.

Medalists from the United States do receive financial bonuses: $38,000 for gold, $23,000 for silver, $15,000 for bronze.

As for Los Angeles, Aoki said reaching the top of the medal table would be tough, but anything is possible.

“Because the reality is, you know, China’s a very large country. The United States is a large country. We have the ability to have athletes contesting every event,” he said. “We just don’t because people don’t know they have access to sport.”

Who is playing in NFL's Week 2? Here is the full schedule https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/nfl/nfl-week-1-schedule-matchups-times-scores-2024/3712541/ 3712541 post 9846149 Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/08/Patrick-Mahomes-GettyImages-1460659524.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 If Week 1 wasn’t frantic enough, Week 2 could add even more drama early on.

Week 2 of the 2024 NFL season will begin with a major AFC East clash on Thursday Night Football as the Buffalo Bills will travel to face the Miami Dolphins.

The early window on Sunday is stacked with 10 games. Among them are the San Francisco 49ers at the Minnesota Vikings, as Sam Darnold looks to follow up with another impressive outing against his former team.

Elsewhere, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will return to Detroit to take on the Lions in a rematch from the 2023 playoffs. The Green Bay Packers, who will likely be without Jordan Love, will host Anthony Richardson and the Indianapolis Colts.

In the late window, Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals will hope to put behind a dismal Week 1 outing, but they’ll have to do so at the Kansas City Chiefs, where Patrick Mahomes and Co. await. The Denver Broncos will host the Pittsburgh Steelers, as Russell Wilson will need to get past an injury to be able to play his former team.

Sunday Night Football will feature No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears against C.J. Stroud and the Texans in Houston.

Monday Night Football will conclude the week with Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons on the road facing Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles.

‘What if I wasn't Tyreek Hill?': Dolphins star speaks out after being detained by police outside of stadium https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/nfl/what-if-i-wasnt-tyreek-hill-dolphins-star-speaks-out-after-being-detained-by-police-near-hard-rock-stadium/3712827/ 3712827 post 9867394 https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/image_990f12.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill was handcuffed and placed face down on a street outside the team’s stadium after he was stopped for speeding and reckless driving Sunday morning before the Dolphins’ first game of the season, an incident that left the star wide receiver baffled and resulted in a police officer being placed on administrative leave.

The officer, who was not identified, was one of at least three involved in detaining Hill. Some fans saw Hill being handcuffed and captured video on their way to the game, and it quickly went viral on social media.

Miami-Dade Police director Stephanie V. Daniels said she had launched an internal affairs investigation.

Told after the game that the officer was placed on leave pending the outcome of the investigation, Hill said: “That should tell you everything you need to know.”

Added defensive tackle Calais Campbell, who was also briefly handcuffed after coming to his teammate’s aid: “That makes sense based on the situation.”

Hill, who said he respects police officers and wants to be one when he retires from football, said he “had no idea” why police placed him in handcuffs.

“I wasn’t disrespectful because my mom didn’t raise me that way,” Hill said. “Didn’t cuss. Didn’t do none of that. Like I said, I’m still trying to figure it out, man.”

Hill starred on the field for the Dolphins, catching seven passes for 130 yards — including an 80-yard touchdown that helped Miami rally for a 20-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Hill celebrated the score by mimicking being handcuffed.

Hill said he didn’t want to use his celebrity to get out of the situation but wondered what would’ve happened if he weren’t an NFL star.

“I don’t want to bring race into it, but sometimes it gets kind of iffy when you do,” he said. “What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill? Lord knows what that guy or guys would have done. I was just making sure that I was doing what my uncle always told me to do whenever you’re in a situation like that: ‘Just listen, put your hands on the steering wheel and just listen.’”

Daniels said in a statement earlier Sunday that she requested an “immediate review” of the details surrounding the incident, adding that the department would review available body camera footage.

In a later statement, Daniels said: “I’m committed to transparency and accountability to the community with any situation involving my officers.”

Hill said everything happened so fast it caught him off guard.

“I’m just glad that my teammates were there to support me in that situation because I felt alone,” Hill added.

Hill, who led the NFL in receiving yards in 2023, said he spoke to his wife and family after he was detained and before the game kicked off.

His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, called it a “heartbreaking situation” on ESPN.

“How things escalated into the situation that they were in, in handcuffs and being held on the ground with police, is mindboggling to me,” Rosenhaus said. “I’m deeply concerned by that. Very troubled. We will be looking into it. We will be investigating this. We will look out for Tyreek, but I’m not going to make any allegations at this time. The most important thing is Tyreek is OK physically, mentally he was very distraught about what happened.”

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said the league has been in contact with the Dolphins, but declined to comment further.

Johnny Gaudreau's widow reveals she is pregnant with 3rd child at funeral for NHL star, brother https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/gaudreau-brothers-funeral/3712796/ 3712796 post 9868447 AP Photo/Matt Rourke https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/AP24253599583423.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200

What to Know

  • John and Matthew Gaudreau were mourned by family, friends and countless members of the hockey community at their funeral in a Philadelphia suburb.
  • Buses brought players and others to St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Media, Pennsylvania, and dozens of others walked in for the service. Columbus Blue Jackets teammate Patrik Laine, Cole Caufield of the Montreal Canadiens, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and longtime executive Brian Burke were among those in attendance.
  • The Gaudreau brothers died Aug. 29 when they were struck by a suspected drunken driver while riding bicycles in their home state of New Jersey.
  • “Everything was always John and Matty,” said Meredith, John’s wife, who revealed she was pregnant with the couple’s third child. “I know John would not have been able to live a day without his brother.”

John and Matthew Gaudreau were remembered as loving brothers and husbands who put family above hockey and everything else at their tearful funeral Monday, a week and a half after they died when they were struck by a suspected drunken driver while riding bicycles in their home state of New Jersey.

Widows Meredith and Madeline Gaudreau described their husbands as attached at the hip throughout their lives. John was 31 and Matthew 29.

“Everything was always John and Matty,” said Meredith, John’s wife, who revealed she was pregnant with the couple’s third child. “I know John would not have been able to live a day without his brother.”

Buses brought players and others to St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and a crowd of hundreds walked in for the service, including several children wearing Gaudreau No. 13 jerseys worn by the NHL player known to fans as “Johnny Hockey.” Columbus Blue Jackets teammate Patrik Laine, Cole Caufield of the Montreal Canadiens, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and longtime executive Brian Burke were among those in attendance.

“It just shows the true honor and respect that everybody gave them. Just can’t imagine what they’re going through,” said Caufield, who will wear No. 13 in honor of John Gaudreau. “Just the amount of people that are here today and yesterday, just anything we can do to help.”

Meredith Gaudreau singled out two of John’s closest friends, Sean Monahan and Kevin Hayes, in her eulogy of more than 30 minutes.

“You helped shape him into the man I fell in love with,” she said. “He looked up to you both on and off the ice. You were his brothers, which means you are my brothers, too.”

John, an All-Star for the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets, and Matthew, who played collegiate hockey alongside his brother at Boston College a decade ago, died on the eve of their sister’s wedding.

The Rev. Tony Penna, the director of campus ministry at BC, asked those inside the church to look around at how many people made the trip to the Philadelphia suburbs to pay their respects, calling it a source of comfort for parents Guy and Jane.

“By the overwhelming presence and overwhelming number of people here today, they’re sending a message to you loud and clear that John and Matthew’s lives mattered, that they were noticed on this earth, they were loved on this earth and they were valued on this earth,” Penna said. “This robust crowd wants you to know that they’re here to tell you, all of you, that they love you, too, and they have your back and they’re here to support you in our loss.”

The Gaudreau brothers were cycling on a road in Oldmans Township at about 8 p.m. on Aug. 29 when a man driving an SUV in the same direction attempted to pass two other vehicles and struck them from behind, according to New Jersey State Police. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, who faces two counts of death by auto, along with reckless driving, possession of an open container and consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle, has been jailed pending a Sept. 13 hearing.

“I urge everyone to not drink and drive,” said Madeline Gaudreau, Matthew’s wife. “Find a ride. Please don’t put another family through this torture.”

A GoFundMe to support Madeline, who is pregnant with the couple’s first child, has surpassed $645,000, with donations from nearly 9,000 people pouring in, many from NHL players and their families.

John and Matthew have been mourned across the sports world, including in Columbus, Ohio, where Gaudreau signed a free-agent deal in 2022 with the small-market Blue Jackets over more lucrative free-agent offers from other teams, including the New Jersey Devils. Fans and Blue Jackets players gathered last week for an emotional candlelight vigil, and a similar gathering was held in Calgary.

The brothers’ lives have been celebrated on social media since their deaths. Katie Gaudreau, the little sister who was supposed to get married the day after the brothers were killed, posted pictures of her family in happier times.

Over the weekend, it was an Instagram video captioned “Birds for the Gaudreau boys” over a clip of John Gaudreau opening his winter coat to flash an Eagles jersey as he went through security ahead of an NHL game. She also posted a tribute to a family slideshow called “That day” where she wrote how she would “do anything to tell my big brothers I love them one more time.”

Alex Morgan says goodbye in final game to cap off illustrious 15-year career https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/soccer/alex-morgan-says-heartfelt-goodbye-after-illustrious-15-year-career/3712897/ 3712897 post 9867160 Getty Images https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/GettyImages-2170904002.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,211 Fighting tears, Alex Morgan waved to the crowd and walked off the field for the last time on Sunday as she capped an impactful 15-year career.

Despite the nearly 100-degree heat, a crowd of 26,516 filled San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium for Morgan’s farewell match. The two-time Women’s World Cup winner announced on Thursday that she was pregnant with her second child and retiring from the game.

She started and wore the captain’s armband for the San Diego Wave in her final match, playing for the first 13 minutes against the North Carolina Courage before subbing out of the game to an ovation.

“I did everything I ever wanted to do and more. With this decision, I feel so at peace because I am ready to start my family and I am ready to hang up the boots and allow the next generation to flourish and just relish in the spotlight,” she said afterward. “It’s a good feeling.”

It was her 63rd appearance for the Wave, commemorated by a No. 63 jersey given to Morgan in a pregame ceremony. Overall, it was her 150th career appearance in National Women’s Soccer League play.

Before the match, the video scoreboard showed snippets of Morgan’s retirement video, along with highlights from her career.

Her 4-year-old daughter, Charlie, accompanied her on the field. She had more than 95 family members and friends at the game.

The Wave’s starters posed for a photo imitating Morgan’s iconic “tea sipping” celebration, an homage to her celebration of her go-ahead goal to beat England in the semifinals of the 2019 World Cup in France.

Morgan’s U.S. national team career was full of accomplishments, including World Cup titles in 2015 and 2019, and an Olympic gold medal in 2012 in London. Morgan played for the NWSL champion Portland Thorns in the league’s first year and helped the Wave win the Shield in 2023.

Morgan played in 224 matches for the U.S. national team, with 123 goals (fifth on the career list) and 53 assists (ninth). She was named the U.S. Soccer Player of the Year in 2012 and 2018.

When she subbed off, she fought back tears as she removed her cleats at midfield. During the substitution, a tifo in the supporter’s section read “For Country, Club, Community.”

Among the fans was San Diego Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove, who went to the game straight from his start against the San Francisco Giants.

“Twelve thousand tickets were sold in one day when she announced that this was going to be her last game” NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman said. “That’s the power of Alex Morgan.”

The North Carolina Courage ultimately won the game, 4-1. Morgan attempted a penalty but it was stopped by Courage goalkeeper Casey Murphy.

But the night was all about celebrating a career.

Wave coach Landon Donovan said his daughter asked him to help her make a sign for Morgan’s last game.

“That stuff is immeasurable because she’s now made my daughter, who didn’t previously watch sports in general, fall in love with a sport, and women’s sports” Donovan said. “That’s what Alex has meant to the game and the sport. And it’s sad to see her go. Honestly, I don’t think there’ll ever be another one like her.”

Wave fan Amber Brunner attended the match with her family, saying “My girls fell in love with soccer because of her.”

Off the pitch, Morgan advanced women’s soccer in her fight for equal pay with the men’s national team.

The U.S. women filed a lawsuit in 2019 that led to a historic agreement in 2022 that equitably paid the men and women.

She also paved the way for reforms in the NWSL, calling for the adoption of an anti-harassment policy after a coach misconduct scandal rocked the league in 2021.

A young fan at the game held a sign that said, “Thank you Alex for all of your hard work for women’s sports.”

Morgan said she’s looking forward to cheering on the Wave, the U.S. national team and continuing her advocacy for the players.

“The next Alex Morgan is not only out there in the stands, because I am sure that there are a few of those, but they’re there on that field every single weekend,” she said. “It’s just incredible what we’ve been able to do here in the U.S. to really give soccer the best chance for people to buy in as much as we’ve bought in.”

Reality bites for Commanders in blowout Week 1 loss to Tampa https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/reality-bites-for-commanders-in-blowout-week-1-loss-to-tampa/3712618/ 3712618 post 9866988 Getty Images https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/GettyImages-2170274367.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 TAMPA — After six months of building a new roster and building excitement among the fan base, Sunday’s season-opening loss in Tampa came as a big dose of ugly reality for Washington Commanders fans.

Washington lost 37-20 in a contest that had far more lowlights than highlights. Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels looked great as a runner, gaining more than 80 yards on the ground and scoring twice, but could not get much going through the air.

On the first play of the second half, wide receiver Terry McLaurin streaked down the left sideline, two steps clear of his defender. A good throw likely results with a walk-in touchdown, however, Daniels sailed the ball just out of McLaurin’s reach.

Outside of Daniels’ scrambling ability, the Washington offense struggled. The pass game seemed centered far too much on passes at or near the line of scrimmage. Midway through the third quarter Commanders receivers only had three catches total, and none of them were named McLaurin.

Defensively, it was worse.

Second-year cornerback Emmanuel Forbes was repeatedly beaten in this game, and the secondary as a whole gave up consistent yardage. Basic tackling was a problem all afternoon. The pass rush wasn’t much better as Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield wasn’t sacked until the third quarter.

Mayfield finished the game with nearly 300 yards passing and an impressive four touchdowns while the Tampa offense piled up more than 100 rush yards.

Perplexing coaching decisions and a bad outing from new kicker Cade York didn’t help either. York missed two field goal attempts and also put a kickoff out of bounds, resulting in a penalty. It’s safe to say York has serious job security questions.

Dan Quinn has zero job security questions, and this is just the first game of his Commanders tenure. Still, questions need to be asked about some of his decision-making.

After a Jayden Daniels rushing touchdown in the second half gave Washington a chance to cut the Bucs lead to a one-score game, Quinn inexplicably kicked an extra point instead of going for two.

The result? The Commanders trailed by nine, which means two scores to take the lead. If Washington failed on the two-point conversion attempt, then they’d be down 10, which would still mean two scores to take the lead.

Throughout the contest, Quinn seemed to err on the side of caution rather than aggression. Perhaps that was because his team was outmanned. Perhaps that’s his manner. Those questions will get answered over time.

What else will take time? Washington’s rebuild.

This was a bad team last year. They only won four games, had no Pro Bowlers and finished with the worst point differential in the NFL.

To expect immediate and overnight success from the new regime was optimistic at best and probably naive. The Commanders need players – good players – and new general manager Adam Peters made clear his intention is to build up the roster through the draft.

That will take years. Plural. But maybe things can look less ugly along the way.

Tom Brady takes awkward first steps in transition from football field to TV booth https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/nfl/tom-brady-awkward-first-steps-football-field-tv-booth/3712591/ 3712591 post 9866928 Getty https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/GettyImages-2170864086-e1725846226333.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Fox Sports is spending $375 million to put Tom Brady in the broadcast booth, and the network wants to make sure everyone knows he’s there.

The seven-time Super Bowl champion made his debut as an NFL analyst during the Fox broadcast of the regular-season opener between the Dallas Cowboys and the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. But first came a Brady hype video leading into the pregame show, where the studio team admitted they couldn’t help but “fanboy” over their new co-worker.

“You’re a broadcaster, how about that!” play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt said when the camera cut to the booth in Cleveland, where Brady, in a coat and tie, made his first live appearance on screen. The former Patriots and Buccaneers quarterback was identified when they cut to the booth as a “7-time Super Bowl champion.”

And that, as the kids say, is a nice flex.

Sideline reporter Erin Andrews made sure to let Dallas coach Mike McCarthy know that Brady had been complimentary of his play calling. Charissa Thompson gave him a couple of shout-outs when she broke in with score updates on the game between Tampa Bay, one of his former teams, and the Washington Commanders.

Burkhardt joked during during another on-screen appearance that he paid extra attention to his hair because he knew there would be more shots of the broadcast booth.

“I do what they tell me. I understand that,” Brady said with a chuckle. “I’m still a rookie in here.”

To the viewers, that was obvious.

Brady’s commentary was knowledgeable, as expected, but also lacking in personality — no Tony Romo anticipating the next play, no John Madden with his “Boom!” and turducken, not even the quarter-zip sweaters that make Peyton Manning stand out from the dozens or hundreds of other ex-jocks who joined the media when their playing careers were over.

There were awkward laughs, a cringey fist-bump with rules analyst Mike Pereira, and a lot of calling players by their first names (along with an unnecessarily deferential reference to “Coach McCarthy”). Brady declined to call out Cleveland receiver Amari Cooper when a pass went through his hands in the fourth quarter and made excuses for the Browns while trying to find positives in a dreadful performance.

As one X user tweeted, “Tom Brady is to broadcasting as Michael Jordan is to baseball.”

(Of course Brady, a sixth-round draft pick who spent his first NFL season as the Patriots fourth-string quarterback, managed to grow into the quarterbacking thing just fine.)

It didn’t help that the game, which Dallas led 27-3 early in the second half, was headed toward a blowout that would challenge even a veteran broadcaster to hold the audience’s interest. But that’s where Brady was able to deploy his experience as an asset.

“There’s plenty of time left in this game,” said the quarterback who famously led the Patriots back from a 28-3 deficit in Super Bowl 51 against Atlanta. “Just the margin of error’s slim.”

On one play, Brady called for Deshaun Watson to throw it to an open tight end; the Browns quarterback didn’t see it.

Brady played 23 years in the NFL before retiring after the 2022 season as the most decorated player in league history. He signed a 10-year deal with Fox Sports — replacing the well-regarded Greg Olsen as the network’s lead analyst. Brady took last year off, a gap that only added to the anticipation over whether he could transfer some of his on-field knowledge and skills to the booth.

A commercial a few minutes before the kickoff featured Brady in his various football uniforms talking to his current self, questioning why he didn’t just take the estimated $450 million he earned in his playing career and “lay on a beach getting fat on pina coladas.”

“What they’re really asking is why don’t you quit football?’ They don’t understand that you live and breathe for football. Because you’re Tom Freaking Brady,” a succession of helmeted Bradys say. “And our football journey isn’t even close to done.”

“Back to work,” the current Brady says.

With five Super Bowl MVP awards in his seven victories in the NFL title game — six for New England and one for Tampa Bay — Brady established himself as the greatest player in league history. He retired with the career records for wins and playoff wins, passing touchdowns and playoff passing touchdowns, and passing yards and playoff passing yards, among other bests.

And while he couldn’t completely avoid controversy in his career — most notably during the two-year Deflategate odyssey that led to a four-game suspension for cheating — Brady rarely made news with anything he said.

Brady’s new career has already seen a setback because his concurrent attempt to purchase a minority share in the Las Vegas Raiders means he won’t have the access to team facilities, players and coaches that other broadcasters receive. He also must abide by the league constitution and bylaws that prohibit public criticism of officials and other clubs; he is allowed to broadcast Raiders games.

The much-anticipated debut stole some of the attention from the game between the defending NFC East champion Cowboys, who signed quarterback Dak Prescott to a record-setting four-year, $240 million contract earlier Sunday, and a Browns team that isn’t expected to make the playoffs.

As the final 30 seconds ticked off on the Cowboys’ 33-17 victory, Brady and Burkhardt discussed their new partnership as much as the game itself. Back in the studio, Michael Strahan picked Brady — not any of the players — as the day’s biggest winner, and Brady shared some wisdom he got from his fellow athlete-turned-TV personality: “You’re going to wake up tomorrow, on Monday morning, you ain’t going to be sore.”

“That,” Brady said, “I’m very happy about.”

Los Angeles-area high school student dies after injury at football game https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/national-international/los-angeles-area-high-school-student-dies-after-injury-at-football-game/3712581/ 3712581 post 9866873 Google Maps https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/240906-south-gate-la-south-east-high-school-google-maps-ac-1152p-cc0baf.webp?fit=300,200&quality=85&strip=all A Los Angeles-area high school student who was recently injured during a football game has died, the high school’s principal said in a letter to the community last week.

The student at South East High School was injured in a junior varsity game against Maywood Center for Enriched Studies on Aug. 23.

South East High School Principal Eric Jaimes said in the message Wednesday, “I am saddened to report the recent death of one of our students.”

“On behalf of our entire school community, I want to offer my deepest condolences. At this time, we request that the privacy of those who have been impacted be respected during this difficult time. Please know that our entire school community offers our support,” Jaimes wrote in the message, provided by a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The Los Angeles Times reported the student needed medical assistance after he tackled another player on the sidelines of the game on Aug. 23.

The Los Angeles Unified School District has not released the student’s name, and he was not identified in Jaimes’ message to the school community.

The message and the district did not specify a cause of death or say whether the death was football-related.

Jaimes said in the message that the school has crisis counselors available for students who need additional support.

“Every member of the South East High School community matters and this loss impacts us all,” he wrote.

The school district spokesperson said it is district policy that at least one medical professional be present at all football games.

Two medical staff members were at the game where the student was injured, and both attended to the student, the spokesperson said.

The National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury said 16 youth league, middle school, high school and collegiate football players died last year.

Thirteen of the deaths were directly or indirectly related to football, it said in an annual report.

Three were directly related to football participation with traumatic brain injury and 10 were indirectly related, which includes things like exertion and medical issues like heatstroke and sudden cardiac arrest, the center said in the report.

Two were not related, and the cause in one death was unknown at the time of the report, it said.

Florida high school football player died Friday after having collapsed on the field during a game. The 18-year-old’s cause of death has not been publicly released.

Joey Logano wins NASCAR playoff opener at Atlanta to advance to 2nd round https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/joey-logano-wins-nascar-playoff-opener-atlanta/3712538/ 3712538 post 9866755 Getty https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/GettyImages-2170878868-e1725835585365.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Joey Logano raced his way into the second round of NASCAR’s playoffs by winning the opener in overtime Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Logano, the only two-time Cup Series champion in the 16-driver playoff field, earned an automatic berth into the next round of races. It was the 11th race of the season to end in overtime — a tie for the record set in the 2017 season.

“That’s how we start the playoffs, boys!” Logano shouted. “When it is playoff time, it is our time.”

Logano is trying to become the only active three-time Cup champion. Kyle Busch, who did not make the playoffs, is the only other driver with two Cup titles.

Ryan Blaney finished second in a 1-2 sweep for Team Penske and Ford. Blaney lined up behind Logano and gave him the pushes he needed to deny Daniel Suarez the victory.

Suarez, who won the closest three-wide finish in NASCAR history here in February, had his own help from Trackhouse Racing teammate Ross Chastain. The two-lap overtime sprint to the finish began with Logano and Suarez lined up side-by-side on the front row, each with their teammate behind them for the push to the front.

Blaney got Logano out first, but Chastain remained locked onto the bumper of Suarez’s Chevrolet and the two dueled it out until Blaney used a final push to get his Penske teammate the win.

Christopher Bell in a Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing finished fourth, and Alex Bowman in a Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports was fifth. Regular-season champion Tyler Reddick of 23XI Racing was sixth and followed by Busch of Richard Childress Racing, Chase Elliott of Hendrick, William Byron of Hendrick and Austin Cindric of Penske. Only two Toyotas — Bell and Reddick — finished inside the top 10.

Larson crashes early

Larson running third in the closing laps of the first stage when his car inexplicably shot into the outside wall.

“I don’t know if I blew a tire or what,” Larson radioed.

As the No. 5 Chevrolet shot back down the track, Larson was hit in the rear by fellow playoff driver Chase Briscoe. That contact caused damage to Briscoe’s Ford.

The incident ended the race for both drivers.

Larson was the points leader at the start of Sunday before his crash, which he called one of the hardest hits of his career and it came without any warning.

“No, not at all. Never. Not once,” Larson said. “It just caught me way off guard. I was never once loose, even in that corner. And then, it just started stepping out. I corrected it and overcorrected it, I guess. I feel fine. Thankfully, everything held up great in the car.”

Briscoe, who won last week’s regular-season finale to make the playoff field, was ranked 13th out of 16 at the start of the race.

“That’s NASCAR — you can be on top one week and you can be at the very bottom of the mountain the next week,” said Briscoe, who added he was fortunate not to be injured. “It was a big hit. One of the biggest hits I’ve had in a long time. My private area hurt pretty bad at first, just when I hit it was a big hit, but, other than that, I’m totally good.

“My head, everything feels fine. I’m glad my ankles didn’t get messed up. The brake pedal and everything went through the floorboard, so I’m thankful that I’m alright, for sure.”

Up Next

The road course in Watkins Glen, New York, makes its debut in the 10-race playoff schedule next Sunday. Hendrick Motorsports drivers Chase Elliott, Larson and William Byron have combined to win the last five races at the track dating to 2018 when Watkins Glen was part of the regular-season schedule.

What's the record for most safeties in an NFL game? Broncos come close in Week 1 https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/nfl/nfl-record-most-safeties-game/3712526/ 3712526 post 9866683 Rio Giancarlo/Getty Images https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/240908-cooper-broncos-getty.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 The goal for NFL teams is to get into the end zone with the ball.

But if you can tackle your opponent in the end zone when they have the ball, that works too.

The Denver Broncos did that pretty well in the first half of Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks, with two safeties in the two quarters.

Sean Payton’s team is just the 19th in NFL history to have two or more safeties in a single game, but the first to do so since 2017. Seven years ago, it was the Miami Dolphins pulling off the feat against… the Broncos.

What’s the record for most safeties in an NFL game?

While 18 teams have had two safeties in a game, only one has had three: the Los Angeles Rams in 1984.

John Robinson’s squad did it on Sept. 30, 1984 in a 33-12 win over the New York Giants. All three of the Rams’ safeties on that day came in the third quarter.

How many safeties did the Broncos have in Week 1?

In the first half of Denver-Seattle, the Broncos recorded two safeties against the Seahawks.

The first came with 11:22 to play in the second quarter when Seahawks lineman Anthony Bradford was called for a holding penalty in the end zone. Then, the Broncos stuffed Zach Charbonnet in the backfield to pick up another two points with 4:24 left in the half.

Denver didn’t log another in the second half, however, and lost 26-20.

Dolphins' Tyreek Hill does handcuff celebration after touchdown vs. Jaguars https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/nfl/dolphins-tyreek-hill-handcuff-celebration-touchdown/3712499/ 3712499 post 9866581 Getty https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/GettyImages-2170859358-e1725828553383.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 After Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill was detained by local police prior to their Week 1 game, the wideout had a celebration in response.

Down 17-7 late in the third against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa found Hill in stride for an 80-yard catch-and-run score.

Upon passing the end zone, Hill went toward fans when fellow Dolphins wideout Jaylen Waddle came from behind and pretended to put handcuffs on the 30-year-old.

Hill, last season’s top receiving-yardage wideout, had received a ticket for reckless driving but was eventually available to suit up.

Miami came back to win 20-17 with Hill finishing the game logging seven catches for 130 yards and the aforementioned score.

The Dolphins will next play on Thursday at home against AFC East foe Buffalo Bills.

Officer placed on administrative duty after detaining Dolphins' Tyreek Hill: Miami Police https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/nfl/miami-dade-officer-placed-on-administrative-duties-after-detaining-tyreek-hill-ahead-of-dolphins-season-opener/3712524/ 3712524 post 9867760 @DylanVega1, Only in Dade https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/090924-tyreek-hill-detained-video-miami-dade-police.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all The Miami-Dade Police Department has opened an Internal Affairs investigation after Dolphins star Tyreek Hill was detained by officers near Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday morning, the department’s director stated.

Hill was detained during a traffic stop just hours before the Miami Dolphins’ Week 1 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

One of the officers involved was placed on administrative duties as the investigation continues, according to MDPD Director Stephanie V. Daniels.

Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told NBC6 that Hill received a ticket for reckless driving while he was going into the stadium.

“The most upsetting part is the way that he was treated. Tyreek is not a guy that should be at his own stadium in handcuffs,” Rosenhaus said. “We’re going to look into it. This isn’t over on our end.”

The NFL’s leading wide receiver from last season was released and later helped the Dolphins beat the Jaguars 20-17.

His 80-yard touchdown catch sparked Miami’s sluggish offense in the third quarter and got the Dolphins within 17-14.

After the score, Hill placed his hands behind his back as if to simulate being handcuffed, hours after he was placed facedown and handcuffed during the traffic stop with MDPD officers.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter shared a video of the incident, with Hill being handcuffed on the ground while surrounded by several officers.

The Dolphins said that several teammates saw the incident and stopped to support Hill.

“Very upsetting just to see Tyreek detained by the police like that — in handcuffs, seemed really excessive,” Rosenhaus added.

Hill reacted to the incident during a post-game news conference, saying he was still trying to process what happened earlier in the day.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for cops, but obviously everybody has bad apples in every situation,” Hill said. “I want to be able to use this platform to figure a way to flip this and make it a positive on both ends — on my end and then also Miami-Dade.”

He also expressed his gratitude for his teammates who showed up.

“I’m just glad that my teammates were there to support me in that situation because I felt alone,” the wide receiver added. “It made me realize that we have a good team this year, for them to put their life on the line.”

Defensive linemen Calais Campbell also said after the game that he too was handcuffed, and that police cited him for disobeying an officer’s order, NBC Sports reported. Campbell told reporters that he approached the scene after spotting Hill, in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. Instead, police handcuffed Campbell as well.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava called the officer’s actions “troubling” in a statement released Sunday afternoon.

ESPN’s Jeff Darlington reported that Hill was cited for reckless driving. He then got into a verbal altercation with the police, according to Darlington, and the officer then chose to handcuff Hill.

The 30-year-old wide receiver is entering his third season with the Dolphins after signing a restructured contract with $65 million guaranteed last month.

Jannik Sinner defeats Taylor Fritz in straight sets to win 2024 US Open https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/tennis/jannik-sinner-taylor-fritz-us-open-final/3712495/ 3712495 post 9866558 Sarah Stier/Getty Images https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/240908-jannik-sinner-getty.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Jannik Sinner beat Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 with a relentless baseline game to win the U.S. Open men’s championship on Sunday, less than three weeks after being exonerated in a doping case.

The No. 1-ranked Sinner, a 23-year-old from Italy, won the second Grand Slam trophy of his nascent career — the other was at the Australian Open in January — and prevented No. 12 Fritz from ending a major title drought for American men that has lasted 21 years.

Andy Roddick’s triumph at Flushing Meadows in 2003 was the last Slam title for a man from the United States. The last before Fritz, a 26-year-old from California, to even contest a final at one of the four biggest tournaments in tennis also was Roddick, who lost to Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2009.

Sinner extended his current winning streak to 11 matches and improved to 55-5 with a tour-high six titles in 2024. That includes a 35-2 mark on hard courts, the surface used at both the Australian Open and U.S. Open, and he is the first man since Guillermo Vilas in 1977 to win his first two Grand Slam trophies in the same season, something such greats as Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Federer never accomplished.

Less than a week before competition began at Flushing Meadows, the world found out that Sinner had tested positive twice for anabolic steroids in March but was cleared because his use was ruled unintentional — the banned substance entered his system via a massage from a team member he later fired.

NFL Week 1 Sunday winners and losers: Sam Darnold and Josh Allen shine, Bryce Young and Deshaun Watson fall https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/nfl/nfl-week-1-sunday-winners-losers-sam-darnold-josh-allen/3712415/ 3712415 post 9866542 Getty Images https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/240908-darnold-allen-young-getty.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all The NFL season is off and running.

After a pair of exciting games on Thursday and Friday to kick off the season, the rest of the league got things going on the first football Sunday of 2024.

The early games delivered some thrilling action, with six of eight contests decided by one score.

The later games were mostly one-sided except for the Denver Broncos giving the Seattle Seahawks a late scare.

Here are the winners and losers from the Sunday games:

Loser: Bill Belichick

The New England Patriots couldn’t seem to do anything right in 2023. In Week 1 of 2024, the script was flipped.

Led by new head coach Jerod Mayo, the Patriots went on the road to Cincinnati and upset Joe Burrow’s Bengals 16-10. New England’s defense was the story, holding the Bengals to just 224 total yards and forcing two turnovers.

While it’s only one game, Belichick will certainly be criticized after seeing his former team perform so well without him. The roster is largely unchanged from last season aside from a change at quarterback to Jacoby Brissett. The veteran went 15 of 24 for 121 yards in Sunday’s victory, while most importantly taking care of the ball.

Winner: Sam Darnold believers

In his return to MetLife Stadium, the former New York Jets first-round pick dismantled the New York Giants.

Darnold led the Minnesota Vikings to an easy 28-6 win, completing 19 of 24 passes for 208 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

It’s been a rough career so far for the 27-year-old quarterback, who has bounced around to four teams since being drafted in 2018. But now in the best situation of his career with head coach Kevin O’Connell and star receiver Justin Jefferson, perhaps 2024 will be the year he puts it all together.

Loser: Bryce Young

The second year of the Bryce Young era looked a lot like the first on Sunday.

Last year’s No. 1 overall picked struggled mightily in Week 1, going 13 of 30 for 161 yards and two interceptions in a blowout 47-10 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

The Carolina Panthers entered the 2024 season with some renewed hope that a revamped coaching staff and offensive line could help Young turn things around. So far, albeit in a one-game sample size, it doesn’t appear like anything has changed.

Winner: The NFL’s dynamic kickoff

The NFL completely changed the way it does kickoffs in 2024, and the results are already noticeable.

Cardinals running back DeeJay Dallas returned a kickoff for a touchdown in the second half of Sunday’s loss against the Bills. While one touchdown isn’t crazy, there were only four kick return touchdowns in all 18 weeks last season.

Winner: Simone Biles

The gymnastics GOAT stays winning.

Fresh off a busy Paris Olympics with three gold medals for Biles, her husband had an exciting debut for the Chicago Bears.

Jonathan Owens recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown in the third quarter of Chicago’s 24-17 win, the first score of the safety’s career. Owens, who has now played for four teams since being undrafted in 2018, is off to a great start in the Windy City after spending last year with the rival Packers.

Loser: Falcons fans

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Atlanta Falcons played in Georgia on Sunday, but you wouldn’t know it by watching the game.

Terrible Towels infiltrated Mercedes-Benz Stadium and took over the Falcons’ home. The Pittsburgh fans helped will their team to a 18-10 win over the Falcons in a sloppy defensive battle.

New Falcons QB Kirk Cousins was rusty in his debut, finishing with just 155 passing yards and two interceptions. For the Steelers, Justin Fields filled in for the injured Russell Wilson. He took care of the ball and let his kicker and defense do the heavy lifting as the Steelers secured the opening day victory.

Winner: Baker Mayfield

The Buccaneers got off to a stellar start to the year, with Baker Mayfield at the heart of it. In Tampa Bay’s 37-20 rout of the Washington Commanders, Mayfield dominated with 24 of 30 completions for 289 yards, four touchdowns and no picks. It marked his fifth-career game with at least four passing touchdowns.

Chris Godwin led the way with eight catches for 83 yards and a score while star Mike Evans had five catches for 61 yards and two touchdowns.

On the other hand, Commanders rookie QB Jayden Daniels delivered on the ground but couldn’t overcome the defense’s inability to get stops. Daniels rushed for 88 yards and two touchdowns on 16 attempts while completing 17 of 24 passes for 184 yards, zero touchdowns and zero picks.

Loser: Deshaun Watson

The Browns may have a quarterback problem…and an expensive one. Watson struggled mightily in a rough 33-17 loss at the Dallas Cowboys, completing 24 of 45 passes for 169 yards, one touchdown and two picks.

Most concerning, though, were some of Watson’s split statistics in just the first half:

The Cowboys do have a strong defense and it didn’t help that Cleveland’s run game didn’t provide balance, but Watson’s run of inconsistent or poor performances date back to when he first joined the team.

He’s still under contract until 2026 and makes $46 million base salary a year, but it gets more costly during his last two seasons. There’s plenty of work to be done if Watson is ever to return to his Houston form.

Winner: J.K. Dobbins

Though Justin Herbert didn’t light up the stat sheet with passing yards, he didn’t really need to. With J.K. Dobbins entering the backfield, Herbert received sorely needed help in distributing the offensive burden. Dobbins, who dealt with multiple rough injuries while with the Baltimore Ravens, turned in a 10-carry, 135-rushing yard performance to go with a touchdown in a 22-10 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Los Angeles Chargers still have a lack of receiving depth, but Dobbins staying healthy and performing like this will be significant.

Owens scooped up the loose ball after a punt was blocked in the third quarter by Daniel Hardy, and he scampered to the end zone to get the Bears within seven points of the Tennessee Titans.

The touchdown was the Bears’ first off a blocked punt since the 2012 season, and Biles had an incredible reaction to her husband’s touchdown:

The touchdown was the second of Owens’ career, as he also had a fumble return for a touchdown in the 2023 season with the Green Bay Packers.

The Bears needed the spark too, as they trailed the Titans by 14 points at halftime of their season opener.

China tops Paralympics final medal table, Team USA places third https://www.nbcwashington.com/paris-2024-summer-olympics/china-tops-paralympics-final-medal-table-team-usa-places-third/3712343/ 3712343 post 9866321 Michael Steele/Getty Images https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/240908-paralympics-table-getty.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 The Paralympics have officially concluded and the medal count is in.

Over the past two weeks in Paris, the world’s best athletes came together and battled for glory in the 2024 Paralympics — and one nation stood out above the rest.

China dominated the medal count with a staggering 95 golds and 222 total medals. Great Britain was second in both golds (49) and total medals (125), with Team USA coming home third in both categories (36 golds, 105 total medals).

The majority of China’s medal came in para track and field and para swimming, where both men and women stood out. China won 21 golds and 59 total medals in track and field, plus 22 golds and 54 total medals in swimming. If you combined the golds from just those two sports, China would be second only to Great Britain.

Team USA also shined on the track and in the pool. The Americans had 10 golds in each sport, with 38 total medals for para track and field and 30 total medals for para swimming. Team USA’s other gold medals came from para equestrian (5), para cycling (4), para triathlon (3), para archery (2), wheelchair basketball (1) and sitting volleyball (1).

Here’s a full look at the top 10 nations in the medal table, per NBCOlympics.com:

Rap star Kendrick Lamar will headline 2025 Super Bowl halftime show https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/nfl/kendrick-lamar-super-bowl-halftime-show-2025/3712405/ 3712405 post 9866307 Timothy Norris/Getty Images for pgLang, Amazon Music & Free Lunch https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/240908-kendrick-lamar-getty.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Kendrick Lamar will pop out on the NFL’s biggest stage next year: The Grammy winner will headline the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show in New Orleans.

The NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation announced Sunday that Lamar would lead the halftime festivities from the Caesars Superdome on Feb. 9. The rap megastar, who has won 17 Grammys, said he’s looking forward to bringing hip-hop to the NFL’s championship game, where he performed as a guest artist with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg in 2022.

“Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date,” Lamar said in a statement. “And I’ll be there to remind the world why. They got the right one.”

Lamar has experienced massive success since his debut album “good kid, m.A.A.d city” in 2012. Since then, he’s accumulated 17 Grammy wins and became the first non-classical, non-jazz musician to win a Pulitzer Prize for his 2017 album “DAMN.”

The rapper’s latest album “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers,” was released in 2022. He was featured on the song “Like That” with Future and Metro Boomin on a track that spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this year. He also garnered another hit with “Not Like Us.”

Roc Nation founder Jay-Z called Lamar a “once-in-a-generation” artist and performer.

“His deep love for hip-hop and culture informs his artistic vision,” Jay-Z said. “He has an unparalleled ability to define and influence culture globally. Kendrick’s work transcends music, and his impact will be felt for years to come.”

Roc Nation and Emmy-winning producer Jesse Collins will serve as co-executive producers of the halftime show. The creative direction of Lamar’s performance will be provided by pgLang.

Cowboys QB Dak Prescott agrees to 4-year, $240M deal to become NFL's highest-paid player: Reports https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/nfl/cowboys-dak-prescott-4-year-240m-contract-highest-paid-player-reports/3712403/ 3712403 post 9866285 Ron Jenkins/Getty Images https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/240908-dak-prescott-getty.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 On the brink of kickoff, Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys have a deal.

The 31-year-old quarterback will become the NFL’s highest-paid player after reportedly agreeing to a four-year, $240 million deal with the team that drafted him back in 2016.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport confirmed the details on the contract extension, which reportedly includes $231 million guaranteed.

Prescott, a three-time Pro Bowler, joins wide receiver CeeDee Lamb as the latest Cowboys star to earn a new contract right before the season.

Last season was arguably the best of Prescott’s career, as he reached career-highs in touchdown passes (36), completion percentage (69.5) and quarterback rating (105.9). The Cowboys went 12-5 but once again lost in their first postseason game, dropping Prescott to 2-5 in his playoff career.

Prescott and the Cowboys will begin their 2024 campaign on Sunday in Cleveland for a date with the Browns at 4:25 p.m. ET.

The NFL’s leading wide receiver from last season has since been released and will be available for the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team confirmed in a statement. The Dolphins said that several teammates saw the incident and stopped to support Hill.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter shared a video of the incident, with Hill being handcuffed on the ground while surrounded by multiple officers.

ESPN’s Jeff Darlington reported that Hill was cited for reckless driving. He then got into a verbal altercation with the police, according to Darlington, and the officer then chose to handcuff Hill.

Hill is available to play in the team’s season opener, which kicks off at 1 p.m. ET in Miami. The 30-year-old wide receiver is entering his third season with the Dolphins after signing a restructured contract with $65 million guaranteed last month.

Tom Brady nearing deal to buy 10 percent of Raiders: Report https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/nfl/tom-brady-buying-las-vegas-raiders-report/3712356/ 3712356 post 9866176 Ethan Miller/Getty Images https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/240908-tom-brady-getty.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Tom Brady is a busy man.

The retired seven-time Super Bowl champion begins his NFL broadcasting career on Sunday for FOX as the Cleveland Browns host the Dallas Cowboys.

While his focus in Week 1 is his TV gig, Brady is expected to dip his toes in another business soon. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that Brady’s bid to buy 10 percent of the Las Vegas Raiders is expected to be approved by the end of the season.

Rapoport said Brady’s approval as a partial owner could be voted on and approved by league ownership as early as October, but there’s also a possibility it gets done in December. Either way, the expectation is that Brady will have his stake in the franchise by the end of the 2024 campaign.

There were concerns about a potential conflict of interest for Brady serving as both a broadcaster and an owner, with plans to restrict him from production meetings with other teams. Rapoport, citing sources, claimed that “many of the issues such as the valuation and Brady’s role as a FOX broadcaster have been addressed and worked through — and are now in a much better place.”

Brady reportedly will not be allowed in another team’s facility, not be able to watch practices and will have no participation in production meetings.

The Raiders’ season kicks off on Sunday in Los Angeles against the Chargers, while Brady will be in Cleveland for Cowboys-Browns. Brady’s former teams will also be in action on Sunday, with the Patriots visiting the Bengals and the Buccaneers hosting the Commanders.

Rutgers orders investigation of gymnastics program following allegations of abuse by coach https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/national-international/rutgers-orders-investigation-of-gymnastics-program-following-allegations-of-abuse-by-coach/3712422/ 3712422 post 9866039 AP Photo/Seth Wenig https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/AP24229693326006.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Rutgers has hired a law firm to conduct an investigation into athlete allegations of bullying, favoritism and revenge by the coach of the gymnastics program.

President Jonathan Holloway announced earlier this week the university hired Lowenstein Sandler partner Matthew Boxer to lead the investigation into allegations against coach Umme Salim-Beasley.

The allegations coincided with the surprising retirement of Scarlet Knights Athletic Director Pat Hobbs on Aug. 16. He cited health issues in stepping down.

A former New Jersey state comptroller and federal prosecutor, Boxer investigated the Rutgers’ softball program in 2020 after members of the team said coaches subjected athletes to emotional abuse and abusive conditioning.

NJ Advance Media first reported the gymnastics allegations, talking with seven former gymnasts and one still on the team who described a “toxic” climate in the program while detailing their experiences with Salim-Beasley.

“This effort will ensure that any and all concerns raised about the program have been thoroughly reviewed, determine whether appropriate follow-up steps were taken, identify reasons for any potentially insufficient responses, and recommend areas where additional steps may be necessary,” Holloway said in a statement. “The review will further identify and address any concerns about the culture of the team that are revealed.”

Holloway said the recommendations in the report will be made public. He said the firm will be paid a $50,000 retainer and a rate of $225,000 for the first month, dropping to $195,000 for the second month. Fees will be revisited if additional time is needed to complete the review.

Holloway told the university governing boards on Aug. 31 about ordering the external investigation. At the time he wrote that he was confident that the university had applied its policies appropriately as it pertains to the gymnastics program.

“Our learning environment depends upon the safety, health, and mental well-being of all our students, and the university strives in every aspect of our operations to foster an environment where our students can thrive,” Holloway wrote. “Rutgers Athletics shares this commitment. Whenever concerns or allegations arise about our support for students, the University investigates those concerns in accordance with our policies, the law, and, in the case of Athletics, our NCAA standards.”

Chicago Sky star Angel Reese announces she will miss rest of season https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/national-international/angel-reese-out-for-season-injury-sky/3712240/ 3712240 post 9865781 Getty https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/GettyImages-2169228758-e1725760097322.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 The Chicago Sky will be without a key player for its playoff push.

Star rookie power forward Angel Reese announced on social media Saturday that she will miss the rest of the season due to a wrist injury.

“What a year. I never would have imagined the last bucket of my rookie season would be a 3 but maybe that was God saying give them a taste of what they will be seeing more of in Year 2 lol,” Reese wrote. “Through it all, I have showed that I belong in this league even when no one else believed. All I have ever wanted was to come into the W and make an impact.

“I can confidently say I have done that and will strive to keep doing so. I’m filled with emotions right now that I have a season ending injury, but also filled with so much gratitude for what is next. Although this is God’s timing and not mine, I am finally able to give myself a physical and mental break.”

Reese added she will still be cheering on along the sidelines while saying she’ll see the new Unrivaled league soon.

The Sky currently are No. 8 in the playoff hunt with six games to go in the regular season. The Atlanta Dream, Washington Mystics and Dallas Wings are all still in the conversation. Chicago has matchups left with all three that will prove decisive.

Reese will end her rookie campaign averaging 13.6 points on 39.1% shooting, 13.1 rebounds (8.1 defensive), 1.9 assists and 1.3 steals.

She also logged the most rebounds in a WNBA season, most consecutive double-doubles and highest rebounds-per-game average in a single campaign.

The LSU product is also expected to be a high candidate for Rookie of the Year, with Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark also in the mix as she helped her team clinch a playoff berth following a 1-8 start.

USMNT interim coach blasts team's mentality in loss to Canada https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/soccer/usmnt-interim-coach-mentality-loss-canada/3712219/ 3712219 post 9865761 Getty https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/GettyImages-2170723336-e1725758673129.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 The Miami-Dade Police Department on Monday released bodycam footage of Tyreek Hill’s detainment Sunday ahead of the Dolphins‘ home game.

Quinn Ewers throws three touchdowns as No. 3 Texas routs No. 10 Michigan 31-12 https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/ncaaf/texas-michigan-31-12-score-quinn-ewers/3712126/ 3712126 post 9865484 Getty https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/GettyImages-2170700106-e1725740290249.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Quinn Ewers threw for 246 yards and three touchdowns, and No. 3 Texas beat No. 10 Michigan 31-12 on Saturday.

The Longhorns (2-0) moved the ball at will through the air and on the ground against the defending national champions, whose turnover-prone offense failed to throw or run the ball effectively.

The Wolverines (1-1) had three streaks snapped in the first regular-season matchup of the traditional college football powerhouses.

Michigan had won a Big Ten-record 29 consecutive regular-season games, 23 straight home games and a national-best 16 games in a row since losing to TCU in the 2022 College Football Playoff.

Davis Warren was 22 of 33 for 204 yards, to go along with a touchdown when the game was out of reach and two interceptions. Preseason All-America tight end Colston Loveland had eight receptions for 70 yards and an unforced fumble for the overmatched Wolverines.

Texas took control early in the highly anticipated game, turning a buzzing Big House into a quiet stadium.

After the game, linebacker David Gbenda took Texas’ white flag with an orange longhorn and tried to plant it into the maize block M at midfield but it didn’t stick in the turf.

That was the only play the Longhorns didn’t make all day.

Texas led 24-3 at halftime and didn’t give up a touchdown until Warren threw a 31-yard pass to Semaj Morgan with 1:54 left.

Ewers threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Gunnar Helm in the first quarter. Helm, a senior tight end, set career highs with seven catches for 98 yards, showing off for 15 NFL teams in attendance.

The Wolverines answered with a field goal on the ensuing possession and the four-point deficit was the closest they would get for the rest of the cloudy and windy afternoon.

Jerrick Gibson had a 7-yard TD run midway through the second quarter, helping Texas average 4.5 yards a carry for a total of 143 yards.

Ewers had a 5-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Golden late in the second quarter and a 7-yard throw to Jaydon Blue in the third as the Longhorns coasted to a lopsided victory with little resistance.

The former Ohio State quarterback completed 24 of 36 passes without an interception, a week after he had 260 yards passing and three touchdowns in a 52-0 win over Colorado State.

The takeaway

Texas, in its first season as an SEC school, looks like it has a chance to contend for conference and national championships.

Michigan coach Sherrone Moore’s first mistake as Jim Harbaugh’s successor may prove to be choosing not to add an experienced quarterback from the transfer portal.

Poll implications

AP poll voters can’t move Texas much higher while they will likely drop Michigan a lot.

Up next

Texas hosts UTSA on Saturday night.

Michigan plays Arkansas State on Saturday.

Packers' Jordan Love injured MCL, not season ending: Report https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/nfl/packers-jordan-love-injury-eagles-brazil/3711975/ 3711975 post 9864870 Getty https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/GettyImages-2170620808-e1725685295494.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Jordan Love suffered what is initially believed to be an MCL injury, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Saturday, citing sources.

It is not expected to be season ending, though Love will miss time. Initial tests revealed that Love’s ACL was intact, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Love’s timetable for a return is somewhere between three-to-six weeks, per Pelissero. There is optimism he can return sooner, depending on a second opinion. If it is three weeks, Green Bay during that time plays at home against Indianapolis, away to Tennessee and back at home versus Minnesota.

On the second to last play of the game in Brazil, the Green Bay Packers star quarterback tried to get off a throw but ultimately had to turn around and flip the ball back to Josh Jacobs.

Love then saw his left leg get caught in a tackle made by Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Jalen Carter. Love went down in pain and had to be helped off to the sideline, where he continued to receive treatment.

After the game, head coach Matt LaFleur said he didn’t know of any updates on the 25-year-old signal caller.

Newly acquired backup Malik Willis entered for Green Bay on the final play, but got sacked as time expired as Green Bay fell 34-29.

Love signed a four-year, $220 million extension with Green Bay over the offseason that made him tied for the highest-paid QB in league history.

The No. 26 overall pick in 2020, Love helped the Packers to the No. 7 seed in the NFC last season in his first full campaign as a starter, showing plenty of promise for the future.

Green Bay had been touted to finish even higher this season after upsetting the No. 2 Dallas Cowboys in the first round last postseason and taking the No. 1 San Francisco 49ers to the final seconds in an eventual loss.

This is a developing story…

Roger Goodell says he would like NFL to have 16 international games per season https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/nfl/roger-goodell-nfl-16-international-games-season/3711877/ 3711877 post 9864616 USA TODAY Sports https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/USATSI_24167592-e1725672127269.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,194 NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Friday he would like the league to have as many as 16 international games in a season.

“The ownership’s approved eight games already,” Goodell said before the NFL’s first game in Brazil. “I hope to get that to 16 at some point in the future. Let’s see how that goes.”

Goodell was interviewed on Peacock ahead of the streaming service’s telecast of Friday night’s matchup between the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles, the first NFL game in South America and one of five international matchups on the 2024 schedule.

That includes three games in London. Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will host a New York Jets-Minnesota Vikings game on Oct. 6 and a Jacksonville Jaguars-Chicago Bears matchup on Oct. 13. The Jaguars will face the New England Patriots at Wembley Stadium on Oct. 20.

The other international game has the New York Giants playing the Carolina Panthers in Munich’s Allianz Arena on Nov. 10.

The NFL is planning a game in Madrid in 2025, though the date and teams haven’t been announced.

Owners voted in December to authorize the league to host eight games internationally each season.

NFL Kickoff record 28.9 million viewers watched Chiefs vs. Ravens https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/nfl/nfl-kickoff-record-28-9-million-viewers-chiefs-ravens/3711868/ 3711868 post 9864591 Getty https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/GettyImages-2170456545-e1725671487682.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,208 Kansas City’s thrilling 27-20 victory over Baltimore on Thursday night was the most-watched NFL Kickoff game since it started in 2002.

The game had a total audience average of 28.9 million, surpassing the 27.6 million that watched the New England Patriots defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2015 opener on NBC. Streaming did not start getting added to audience figures until 2016.

It was a 5% increase from the 27.5 million that watched Detroit beat Kansas City in last year’s opener.

Despite the start of the game being delayed 20 minutes due to a storm that included lightning, NBC averaged 24.3 million, according to Nielsen, with the audience peaking at 33 million during the second quarter (9:30-9:45 p.m. EDT).

It also drew a 37 share on NBC, which is its largest for any regular-season game since it started carrying NFL prime time games in 2006. A share is the percentage of all television sets in use at a given time watching a program.

According to Adobe Analytics, streaming on Peacock, NBC and NFL digital platforms averaged 4.6 million.

Multiple NFL players plan to wear Guardian Cap during games this season https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/nfl/nfl-players-wearing-guardian-caps-2024-season/3711790/ 3711790 post 9864205 Todd Rosenberg/Getty Images https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/GettyImages-2166692310-e1725661841981.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 The first NFL Sunday of the 2024 season will feature at least a few Guardian Caps.

Tennessee Titans tight end Josh Whyle said Friday that he plans to wear a Guardian Cap during games in the 2024 campaign, starting with his team’s opener against the Bears in Chicago on Sunday. He’ll be among the first NFL players to wear a Guardian Cap in a regular-season game.

Whyle suffered a concussion during a joint practice with the Seattle Seahawks in August. It was his second concussion in less than a year.

“Just for my own safety,” Whyle said of his decision to wear the cap, via TennesseeTitans.com. “Can’t afford to get another (concussion), and I want to be out there playing on Sundays.”

The Indianapolis Colts, meanwhile, will have a couple of players sporting a Guardian Cap for their Week 1 showdown with the Houston Texans. Tight end Kylen Granson and safety Rodney Thomas II will continue wearing the extra head protection after doing so for preseason contests.

“My mom, my parents, they’ve always taught me, from an early age, protect yourself, protect your head,” Granson said, via Joel A. Erickson of the Indianapolis Star. “That’s what’s really important. Your health.”

Thomas II said of his decision: “If I’m practicing like that every day, day to day, I’ll play the same way I practice. It doesn’t hurt me at all to wear it. You can only gain from it.”

Granson and Thomas II were among six players — and five Colts players — who wore a Guardian Cap during preseason games, according to ESPN’s Turron Davenport.

IRodney Thomas II of the Indianapolis Colts sports a Guardian Cap for a preseason game against the Denver Broncos at Lucas Oil Stadium on Aug. 11, 2024, in Indianapolis.

What is a Guardian Cap in football?

A Guardian Cap is a soft shell covering the top of a helmet designed to absorb contact and lessen the impact of hits to the head. According to NFL data, the cap will absorb at least 10% of the force during a hit to the helmet. That doubles to 20% if both players involved in the hit are using the caps.

This is the first season in which players are permitted to wear a Guardian Cap during games.

“We now have two years of data showing significant concussion reductions among players who wear Guardian Caps during practice,” said Jeff Miller, NFL EVP overseeing player health and safety, back in April.

What are the NFL’s Guardian Cap rules?

The NFL first mandated the use of Guardian Caps during the early portion of training camp in 2022, when all linemen, tight ends and linebackers were required to wear them at practices.

Last year, the mandate was expanded to all preseason practices along with contact practices in the regular season and postseason. Running backs and fullbacks were also added to the position groups required to wear them.

For 2024, receivers and defensive backs became required to use them, and all players were given the option of wearing the caps in games.

Players can be exempt from wearing a Guardian Cap if they sport one of six new helmet models the NFL introduced ahead of this season.

Joakim Noah says he got to ‘live out dreams as a basketball player' thanks to Arthur Ashe https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/sports/tennis/joakim-noah-credits-arthur-ashe-living-basketball-dream/3711545/ 3711545 post 9863475 Fernando Alonso, Getty Images https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/image-84.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Joakim Noah’s relationship with tennis is as unique as it gets.

In fact, it is so special that the NBA legend credits tennis’ leading icon Arthur Ashe for being where he is today.

Noah, son of former professional tennis player Yannick Noah, shared how his “privileged” upbringing paved the way for his extraordinary basketball career.

“Tennis is part of who I am,” Joakim Noah said at the U.S. Open’s Emirates Suite on Wednesday night. “Even though it’s a different sport than basketball, I learned a lot of who I am through tennis.”

Noah, 39, a two-time NBA All-Star with the Chicago Bulls, shared how his father began his tennis journey with a wooden paddle in the small African country of Cameroon. During Arthur Ashe’s workshops in the region, he spotted the 10-year-old Yannick Noah experimenting with the sport and invited him to train at the French Tennis Federation’s center in Nice in 1971.

The journey didn’t end there. After years of rigorous training in France, Yannick received a remarkable opportunity from Arthur Ashe to play doubles with him at Wimbledon when he was just 16.

“Without Arthur Ashe’s opportunity, I wouldn’t be a kid who grew up in New York City and got to live out my dreams as a basketball player,” Joakim said.

Joakim remembers observing his father’s intense work ethic day in and day out. The part that stood out most to him was the endurance training — something the basketball star translated into his own sport.

“I grew up a privileged kid,” Joakim said. “My relationship with tennis was a little bit different because it was the work ethic and the training and the things behind the scenes that made me who I was.”

Joakim was in attendance for NBA night at the U.S. Open with Emirates — the official airline sponsor of the Grand Slam and partner of the basketball league.

He joined NBA star and analyst Jalen Rose and tennis legend James Blake in a suite inspired by the airline’s revamped fleet, engaging in a candid conversation about competing in major sporting events.

“Every time I come here [Arthur Ashe Stadium], it’s a real humbling moment for me and my family because I know what that meant to us,” Joakim said.

Sports betting firm bet365 fined $33,000 for taking bets after outcomes were known https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/national-international/bet365-fined-taking-bets-after-outcomes-known/3711540/ 3711540 post 9863427 Jakub Porzycki/NurPhoto via Getty Images https://media.nbcwashington.com/2024/09/GettyImages-1235399974.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 New Jersey gambling regulators have levied a $33,000 fine on sports betting company bet365 for taking wagers on events in which the outcome was already known, and on games that were not approved for betting.

The state Division of Gaming Enforcement revealed Wednesday that the company had numerous instances in which it mistakenly accepted bets on games in which a particular thing had already happened.

In one case, it took bets on a mixed martial arts match that had already been held a week earlier, and was being shown on tape.

The company did not respond to messages seeking comment Thursday and Friday.

It was the second disciplinary action New Jersey regulators took against the British company in just over two months.

In July, the gaming enforcement division ordered bet365 to refund $519,000 to customers who won bets but were paid less than they were entitled to when the company unilaterally changed the odds when making the payouts.

In that case, the company told New Jersey regulators they changed the odds due to “obvious error.” But the acting head of the enforcement division noted that any company wanting to void or alter a payout must seek approval from the agency before doing so, adding bet365 did not do so.

The most recent fine involves events beginning on Feb. 3, 2022, when the start time of a college basketball game between Louisiana-Lafayette and Arkansas-Little Rock was moved up by an hour, but pre-match odds remained in place.

Similar pre-match odds were available two weeks later on a Honda Golf Classic event for four hours after it had started.

That same day, bet365 took bets on two mixed martial arts fights after they had concluded, according to the state.

In April of that year, bet365 took bets on a Professional Fighters League match that had already been held a week earlier, failing to confirm that the event had already taken place.

The company also took bets on unapproved events including European friendly soccer matches that were not approved for betting by New Jersey gambling regulators, and on the Rutgers University football team. Betting is prohibited on New Jersey college teams.

In most cases, bet365 voided the bets, totaling over $257,000, and returned the money that had been wagered to customers. But in one case, it unilaterally changed the odds before paying off winning bets without getting approval from regulators, the state said.

It offered several explanations to regulators for the mistakes, including human error in incorrectly loading event start times into the betting applications it used. It also said software did not function as designed in some cases.

The company told regulators it has retrained workers.
